Roald Dahl was born at Villa Marie, Fairwater Road in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales. He attended boarding schools in England: first, Saint Peter's in Weston-super-Mare, and then Repton School in Derbyshire

During his early years, Roald spent his summers with his mother's family in Norway.

After finishing school, Roald joined the Shell Oil Company. He lived in England during his two years of training, then moved to Dar-es-Salaam, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), where he lived in the Shell House outside Dar-es-Salaam.

In November of 1939, Roald joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) and lived where ever the RAF assigned him to live, including Nairobi, Kenya; Iraq; Alexandria, Egypt; Eleusina, Greece; and Haifa, Egypt.

After his return to Britain, Roald Dahl moved to Washington, DC.

In 1954, Road bought "Gipsy House" in Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire, England, which was his home until his death in 1990.
