Hi. Guinea Pigs will sleep during the day and the night - they are diurnal so are more active during the daylight hours but this does not mean they will never go to sleep in the day.

According to Sharon Vanderlip in The Guinea Pig Handbook(2003, p91) guinea pigs are awake for around 20 hours a day and are in an 'alert state' for most (more than half) of that time. Moreover, when they do go to sleep, they do so for shortish periods of time, around 6-10 minutes.

Sometimes, they will relax and appear to sleep whilst still awake or semi-awake - my two tend to half-dose for periods during the day, particularly in warmer, more humid weather (they have a fan and in hot weather cooling pillow to prevent over-heating, but they do get a bit more lethargic). They lie down in a relaxed state but respond very quickly to you if you approach them with food and have their eyes open or half open to keep an eye on what's going on.

Guinea Pigs will truly sleep during the day, but every now and again they wake themselves up and either re-position themselves, go for a stroll, play with their toys or eat something.

I think it is safe to say that the advice on guinea pig sleep is a good general rule and will not necessarily fit the behaviour of all individuals exactly. Of my two guinea pigs, one rarely sleeps during the day (she tends to relax in a sphynx-like position generally but sometimes lies on her side) and the other is far more sleepy, but as she prefers to relax on her side it is more difficult to tell when she is truly asleep and when she is just relaxed. She does actually sleep during the day (which you can tell because her eyes are closed and her breathing is very regular - it's an adorable sight) and I think sleeps for slightly longer than 10 minutes at a time when it's warm (say 12-15 minutes), but she gets up regularly.

If you are worried that your guinea pigs are uncharacteristically sleepy and might be ill, then check www.guinealynx.com to see if they might have any of the illnesses listed there, and if you are still concerned take them to see a vet.

Do Guniea pigs sleep with their eyes open?

yep. my guinea pig does, and in the wild, it tricks their pretadors into thinking they are awake and watching out. if your guinea pig feels extremely relaxed, comfortable, or safe, she or he will occasionally sleep with its eyes closed.

Is it bad if a guinea pig doesn't close its eyes when its sleeping?

No! Really, no! It is a guinea pigs natural instinct to sleep with it's eyes open because in the wild they had to watch for predators and always be alert. A guinea pig will only sleep with his/her eyes closed if they are extremely content or they feel safe.
