deposition occurs at the part of a river where there is no longer enough energy for the water to carry the sediments and they are deposited. Deposition is when an agent or erosion (in this case river water) loses energy and can no longer carry sediments, so it deposits them.

Rivers and streams carry sediments by the force of moving water. This is erosion. When the moving water slows down, its ability to carry sediments decreases. Sediments are deposited (deposition) when the forces of friction and gravity overcome the force of the moving water.

Erosion occurs in meanders and fast flowing parts of the river.

Deposition occurs when the flow is too slow to carry the particles so drops the dirt and soil it is carrying.

Deposition also occurs on the inside of a meander, which is why the meander stays the same width, but moves about.

A river can only carry a load if it has adequate energy. When the energy drops below a certain level, therefore, the load is dropped. In the Thalweg (the line of fastest flow), more load is carried, and this is also where the erosion occurs, adding more load. On the inside of a meander, for example, since the Thalweg is on the outside, the velocity on the inside is very low, and so deposition occurs. On the very inside, water merely trickles past. This is incapable of transporting load, so it deposits it until it is able to carry all of it.

In a meandering river or stream, the area of highest erosion would be on the outer bend of the meander. Deposition would occur on the shore of the inner bend.
