Blood enters the heart through two large veins, the inferior and superior vena cava, emptying oxygen-poor blood from the body into the right atrium. The pulmonary vein empties oxygen-rich blood, from the lungs into the left atrium.

Most volunteer blood donations in the U.S., following the actual blood collection, are transported to regional blood collection facilities. There they are separated by centrifugation into components, primarily red cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate. Donor blood samples are simultaneously screened for FDA required transfusion-transmitted diseases. Upon completion of testing. the units are labeled, stored appropriately and shipped to area hospitals, dialysis centers, same-day surgery centers, etc. for patient use.
