What happens to cookie dough when you put it in the oven? The heat of the oven produces changes in the ingredients that make them interact and combine. Without melting the dough, the heat changes it into a whole new product - a cookie.

answ2. Rock may have its character changed by heat and pressure - the main components of metamorphism.

Marble is one of the low-grade metamorphic rocks, the limestone has become crystallized, but has obviously not been subject to sufficient heat to drive off the CO2.

High grade metamorphism is the name given to rocks that have had all of their original crystal structure and most of their chemical bonds changed.

In this process new minerals will be formed, minerals that were not present in the original rock.

Granites and their cousins the volcanic rocks illustrate the complete changes made to an original rock source. The new minerals present will indicate the maximum temperatures to which the rock has been exposed; and the last minerals to cool (those with a low freezing point) will indicate the age of the last cooling phase. This is inferred by radioactive tracer measurements, rather like C14 measurements.
