EZ means "son of" in the Hebrew and/or Arabic tradition. So VELASQU-EZ means "son of Velasco". Velasco is not a first name anymore but it must have been. By the way, the "c" changed to "qu" because in Spanish a "c" in front of an "e" would make the "c" soft. In order to preserve the hard "c" sound, you must convert the "c" to a "qu" before an "e" ending.
