Like most Lamborghinis, the name 'Murciélago' name was derived from bullfighting.

During a fight in 1879, the bull with this name was still standing after 24 stabs from the 'espada', the matador's sword. The audience bayed for the fierce bull to be kept alive. The bull was later bought by Don Antonio Miura. Incidentally, he bred the Miura bulls that named the first mid-engine road car, the Lamborghini Miura.
