Obviously, digestion begins in the mouth. People eat the food. That is the beginning. Nothing starts without beginning.

The teeth work to chew food into small pieces, because the greater surface area, the faster and more effective the gastric juices (acids and enzymes) can further dissolve the food. Saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase which works to begin breaking down the carbohydrates, like those found in bread.

In the mouth. Chewing is the first stage of digestion. Also, saliva helps to break down food by moistening it and contains an enzyme called amylase that break down carbohydrates. (starches into sugars).

Actually, as is often not included as part of the digestive system, digestion begins almost the second one puts something, for instance a cracker, into their mouth. Imagine this cracker sitting on the tongue and then being chewed and chomped by the incisors in the teeth and by the mouth. The movement of one's jaw further enhances digestive enzymes, or saliva, that begins the breakdown of particles in the mouth. In other words, digestion starts with the help of the salivary glands in the mouth.

Digestion of food starts the minute you put the food in your mouth. The teeth start digestion by tearing and crushing food down into smaller pieces so that it will fit down the throat.
