They are named praying mantis because of their tyical "prayer-like" stance. The word mantis derives from the Greek word mantis for prophet or fortune teller.

I also thin it came from back then when people would say "Don't Let The Bed Bugs Bite"

Praying mantises don't really originate from any where they are everywhere but many species like the Chinese praying mantis originated from china and were used there for biological pest control because they ate all the harmful insects for the plants and where later brought from there for pest control here and are sold at local plant nurseries
