Most hurricanes originate as tropical disturbances that emerge off the west coast of Africa. These waves travel westward over warm ocean water, and gain strength from the moisture that evaporates off of it. As the system strengthens the pressure drops, and wind speed increases. Owing to the Coriolis effect the system starts to rotate and organize. When it is organized enough it is declared a tropical depression. When winds reach 39 mph it is declared a tropical storm and is given a name. When winds reach 74 mph or more it is declared a hurricane.
They originate in the tropics in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Oceans.
