They were betrayed by person or persons unknown. Three separate criminal investigations after the war failed to find enough evidence to indict anyone in their betrayal. At this distance from their betrayal (67 years) it is very unlikely anyone will ever be brought to justice, as the betrayer or betrayers are most likely dead now.
