Answer:
The scripture is: "...For as he THINKETH in his heart, so is he..." (Prov.23:7).
It's the "spiritual equivalent" of: "You are what you eat." Apart from outside forces and conditions beyond our control... the physical nourishment we willingly consume, for the greater part, determines our physical health.
The Bible speaks of itself as "spiritual bread" for the "spirit" in us, which is our "intellect" or our "mind"... figuratively, the "heart" and core of our being. What a man thinks, therefore, determines his "spiritual health"... what kind of person, character and personality he grows and develops into.
"...It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God..." (Matt.4:4).
"...it is My Father who gives you the True Bread from heaven... I am the Bread of Life..." (John 6:32-35).
"...for the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." (Heb.4:12-13 NIV)
It says so in the Bible.

Either that or he's just saying what he thinks you want to hear so that he can get in you pants. Unfortunately, words are easy, commitment is more difficult.
