Robert Walton is a character of the novel 'Frankenstein', written by Mary Shelley. He is the one who tells the story of Victor Frankenstein and the monster he created, after hearing the story from Victor himself, after he was rescued by him and his crew. He is a British adventurer that shares Victor's aims for greatness and adventure, he is also someone who feels as lonely as Victor and as the Monster, so he can understand their pain.

He's in the north pole when Frankenstein is in search of his monster. He's there because, like Frankenstein, he wants to discover something and become famous out of ambition, but Frankenstein warns him that knowledge can be dangerous.

Robert Walton longs for friendship, because he is very lonely. He ended up leaving everything that he had behind, just to reach his goal (which is to explore the North Pole, its' magnetic properties, and descover a pathway for the countries to get to it). He didn't really have friends on the ship, and he wanted to have a companion he could relate and share his feelings with.
