Neptunium is an artificial chemical element. Neptunium can be found in the nature only in ultratraces resulting from nuclear weapons experiments, radioactive wastes from nuclear reactors or from other experiments. Neptunium is found also in extremely low concentrations in uranium ores.

Sometimes when a U-235 nucleus is whacked with a neutron it captures the neutron and becomes U-236 instead of splitting. Some of that U-236 can also absorb a neutron to form U-237. U-237 decays via beta emission, which is essential just converting a neutron into a proton and an electron (beta particle). This creates Np-237, which has a half-life of around 2 million years. U-235 + n ---> U-236 + n ---> U-237 ---> N-237 + b-

The most common isotope of neptunium - Np-237 - has in the nucleus 93 protons and 144 neutrons.
For other isotopes the number of neutrons is different.
Number of neutrons = Mass number of an isotope - 93
