Mosquito comes from the Spanish and Portuguese for "little fly." Mosquitos resemble little flies. Thus, 'mosquito.' The Gulf of Mosquito was named for the large and numerous mosquitos which reside in there.
The Bay of Mosquitoes and the Mosquito Coast names are derived from the original inhabitants, the Miskito Indians, whose name was corrupted into Mosquito by European settlers.
The Gulf of Alaska is the closest gulf that is located south of Alaska. The gulf is located in the Pacific Ocean.
