There were no F5 or EF5 tornadoes in 2010. Some suspect that the Bowdle, South Dakota tornado of May 22 may have reached EF5 intensity. However, it did little damage as it moved over open country, and so could not be rated higher than EF4.
Ted Sandmeier from Bowdle So. Dak. invented the 1st "snowbird". He flew a cub piper for many years. When a storm damaged the wings of the plane, he took the motor and the propellers, attached it to the front part of the plane that he cut off just past the cone, put skies on it and away he went!! It could carry 2 adults or 3 children and 1 adult. My Dad was a genius!!!
There were 13 tornadoes in the U.S. in 2010 that were rated EF4, and tornadoes of the same rating are generally said to the the same strength, though had higher estimated winds than others. The tornado with the highest estimated winds in 2010 was an EF4 that occurred near Thompson, North Dakota on June 17 and had peak estimated winds of 185 mph. However, another tornado might have been stronger. On May 22 another EF4 tornado touched down near Bowdle, South Dakota. This tornado was also rated EF4. However, storm chaser and tornado expert Tim Samaras has remarked that this tornado may very well have reached EF5 strength at one point (which would indicate winds over 200 mph), but there were not enough damage indicators to decide that conclusively.
