The date, mint mark, and motto E Pluribus Unum are incused (recessed) into the coin's edge. They can be difficult to see in some cases.

During 2007 and 2008 the other motto "In God We Trust" was on the coin's edge as well but protests from conservatives forced the Mint to move the motto to the coin's face.

Starting in 2009, the same items appear on the edge of Native American dollars as well.
