Take your hand, and grasp your fingers around the part that isn't sharp. If to be used for cutting, then hold it with your thumb on the opposite side of your fingers, the pointy ending pointing towards the ceiling/sky, if to be used for stabbing (Although I highly recommend you don't...) then hold the same way, with the pointy ending pointing towards the ground.
