Open the hood on your truck, look at the back firewall. You will see two water hoses sicking out. That is where your heater core is located. As for getting it out through the dash? Good luck.
The heater core on a Dodge Dakota is inside the HVAC housing, under the dash.
First make sure you have coolant in your radiator.Pull off heater core hoses and connect a garden house to the pipe and flush it out.Check vacuum lines by the heater core hose.

This is my son-in-laws truck. I have to fix it
heater core is leaking.
A possible cause could be that you have a clogged heater core.
Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water hose from the heater core. Remove the heater core retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new heater core.
To change the heater core in a 1999 Dodge Dakota, first, disconnect the battery and drain the cooling system. Remove the dashboard and the heater box cover to access the heater core; this typically involves removing several screws and clips. Disconnect the hoses attached to the heater core, remove it from the housing, and replace it with the new core. Finally, reassemble the heater box, dashboard, refill the cooling system, and reconnect the battery.
You will have to disconnect the liquid line and the accumulator from the evaporator tubes in order to remove the heater core.....
It is located behind the passenger side dashboard. The dashboard has to be removed to replace.
Depending on where you buy it from, between $45.00 to 250.00 dollars.........
