The pcm of a 2001 Taurus should be located under the hood. The unit is bolted onto the firewall on the passenger side.

On a 2001 Ford Ranger : In the Power Distribution Box ( which is " live " ) located in the engine compartment , on the drivers side ( the # 54 relay is the relay for the Powertrain Control Module / PCM )
I'm not a mechanic / technician but you would also have to change the transmission , the Powertrain Control Module ( PCM ) , and I don't know if the exhaust system is the same if you wanted to replace a 4.6 with a 5.4 in a 2001 Ford Expedition
In a 1997 Ford Expedition : In the Power Distribution Box ( which is " live " ) located in the engine compartment ( the # 6 relay is the Powertrain Control Module power relay ) * it is located near fuse # 28 and # 29 I believe near the brake fluid reservoir end of the box
Looking in the engine compartment , at the firewall , towards the right / passenger side , you can see the wiring harness bolted to one end of the PCM , the PCM is " hidden " behind the glove compartment
The pcm is located on the drivers side of car, by the radiator.
Timing is pre-set by the PCM

The PCM on a 1997 Ford E350 is located under the hood on the drivers side. It is toward the back near the firewall.Ê
Beneath the emergency break under the dash. It's housed in a black casing, which is secured with two 7mm bolts.
