Because after the wise men visited Herod and asked about the new king, Herod order children 2 and under to be slaughtered all we know is that Jesus must have been under 2 years of age. Tradition tells us that there were 3 gifts but we are not sure of the number of wise men that made the journey and that Jesus was probably in the city and not the stable when they arrived.
