The Carpathia was the ship that came to the rescue of the survivors of the Titanic.

The SS Californian, however, was the closest ship to the Titanic at the time of its sinking. It did not respond to distress calls made from the Titanic.

The closest ship to the Titanic when it sank was the SS California but it did not respond to the Titanic's distress calls because their wireless operator was asleep and they thought that rockets were for a party. They tried to use a 4 mile Morse lamp to communicate with the Titanic but it was 10+ miles away and the Titanic could not see it.

the californian, but it never answered the rockets, nor the distress calls. the captain said he was asleep at that time. yet it was only ten miles away and could have easily saved just about everyone on the titanic.
