The tortilla chip was popularized by Rebecca Webb Carranza as a way to make use of misshapen tortillas rejected from the automated tortilla manufacturing machine that she and her husband used at their Mexican delicatessen and tortilla factory in southwest Los Angeles.[1]

First they wash them, then they dry them, they peel the potato, then slice the potato and fry or bake them, then they salt.
They were actually made by accident. Someone was making something with potatoes and they cut them too thin! And when they came out of the oven, they were nice and crisp. So..... The End!

A flour tortilla is made of flour, salt, oil (Lard) and water. Many recipes now list baking powder, which is not necessary as tortillas are an unleavened bread. Corn tortillas are made of masa harina (corn flour) and water.
