Between 1733 and 1867, Alaska was a Russian colony. This territory was sold to the United States at a bargain price, by the Russian government, who mistakenly though it was just worthless Tundra.

Russia claimed land in the far north of North America, specifically in present-day Alaska, by establishing colonies and trading outposts in the 18th century. It wasn't until 1867 that Russia sold Alaska to the United States in what became known as the Alaska Purchase.
Spain, in 1500s. St. Augustine was the first permanent European settlement in North America. Spain lost the colony to Britain in 1763 but regained it after the American Revolution.
