The Spanish settled here first - in Florida. Around 1513 with the arrival of
Ponce De Leon, although he may not have been the first. Although some
may argue that VINLAND was settled first somewhere around Nova Scotia,
by Leif Erikson - around 970 to 1020 AD.
Of course the "Indians" arrived here a LOT earlier. Around 15,000 to 25,000 years
earlier, as best we can tell!

The European country that first settled Manhattan Island was the Netherlands, specifically the Dutch Republic. The settlement was known as New Amsterdam and was established in the early 17th century. It was later taken over by the English in 1664 and renamed New York.
