Most younger martial artists are in karate, often Tae Kwon Do. Most karate schools limit contact until they are somewhat knowledgable about what they are doing and they are well padded when the spar. Some schools do not even do sparring. Don't sign a long term contract until you have evaluated the school and participated in a free class or short term trial.
I would also say something like karate because it's not as easy to get sick of doing and they would probably find it more "cool" and enjoyable at that age.
