Each version has its version-exclusive Pokémon and some minor changes in gameplay but overall they are basically the same.
Pokémon X's mascot, Xerneas, is known as the Life Pokémon while Yveltal, the Y's mascot, is the Destruction Pokémon.

You can choose which is better based off of this, as it's really personal preference. One thing to note is that Xerneas (Fairy) beats Yveltal (Dark/Flying) and Zygarde (Dragon/Ground). In addition, many believe that Xerneas is overpowered, perhaps to compensate for how few powerful fairy type Pokémon there are in generation 6.
X and Y are practically the same game, with some differences in which Pokemon can be found in the game. I'd suggest looking at the Pokemon you can find in the two versions and picking the version you like the exclusive Pokemon of more.
