In Matthew's Gospel, Mary and Joseph were returning with Jesus from Egypt to their hometown of Bethlehem, when God warned Joseph in a dream to turn aside and travel to Nazareth instead. The reason for the warning was that one of Herod's sons had become king of Judea, including Bethlehem. Another son was king of Galilee, which included Nazareth, but for some reason Matthew did not see this as an issue. So, to Matthew, it was God who was responsible for the family making this fortunate move.

In this gospel, it was necessary to find a storyline that would eventually take Jesus from Bethlehem to Nazareth: the magi; the flight to Egypt; and when returning to their home in Bethlehem, the dream that caused Joseph to turn aside and travel to a city called Nazareth, in Galilee. This account involves King Herod, but no Roman official.

They remained in Egypt until they had heard of Herod's death and then began the return journey to Bethlehem. Warned by an angel that Herod's son, Archelaus, still posed a threat, they turned aside from Bethlehem and travelled to Galilee, where they settled in a town called Nazareth. This is an entirely different nativity story to that in Luke's Gospel, where Nazareth was already the home of Mary and Jospeh, and where they remained at all times under King Herod's rule. There is no evidence that Herod had the boys under two years old killed and the first century Jewish historian Josephus, who willingly wrote everything he knew against Herod, never mentioned this. Scholars say that the author of Matthew's Gospel was simply trying to draw a parallel between Moses and Jesus.
