The API classification "SM" is typically higher than "SG." SM oils have improved performance and additives compared to SG oils, making them better suited for newer vehicles with more advanced engine designs. It's important to consult your vehicle's owner's manual for the recommended oil classification.
°API = [ 141.5 / (SG @ 60°F) ] - 131.5 SG= specific gravity (always taken at 60°F when calculating API)
Yes. sm is better and newer than sf or sg.
I own a 94 Nighthawk 250 and my owners manuel says to us 10w-40. It also says to "Use only high detergant, premium quality oil cerified to meet API Service Classification SF or SG."
depends on your climate, but a good synthetic 5w-30 will be sweet. As long as its API SG or higher
SAE 10W-40, API SF or SG
Motor oil is rated many ways. One is the API rating for gasoline motors. SJ is better than SH, SH is better than SG, SG is better than SF. etc. So as long as the letter comes later in the alphabet it is ok. However the most modern oils ( e.g. SM) are not suitable for old engines.
The value of 1 kg of heavy crude will be between 1.0 to 1.0714 liters. Definitions of heavy oil vary. Generally, a range of 10 degrees to 20 degrees API is one qualifier, and the viscosity of the oil is a second qualifier. Specific gravity (SG) = 141.5/(131.5 + API) where API = degrees API density. So, 20 degrees equals SG of 0.9333. This is equal to 0.9333 kg/ liter, so 1 liter = 1/0.933 = 1.0714 kg. For 10 degrees API, SG = 1. See related links for discussion of heavy oil and tars.
Iraq's fields produce from numerous formations, with varying crude densities. Many of these fields have large ranges, such as the Mauddud formation with a range of densities 12 to 38 degrees API. The two largest fields Kirkuk and Rumaila have average gravities of 32 to 33 degrees API. To convert from degrees API to specific gravity (SG), SG = 141.5/(131.5+API) See related links.
The oil capacity for a 2005 Honda Recon 250 is 1.6 quarts or 51.2 ounces. The recommended oil is an SG or higher API rating in a 10-40 weight.
Type: SAE 10W-30, SAE 10W-40, SAE 20W-40 or SAE 20W-50 Recommended engine oil grade: API service SG type or higher, JASO standard MA Engine oil quantity: Periodic oil change: 1.00 L (1.06 US qt) (0.88 Imp.qt)
SAE 10w-40 API SF or SG oil. I would recommend you use synthetic.
A 10w40 oil with an American Petroleum Institute or API rating of SF or SG.
