Diners Club
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "the use of credit cards originated in the United States during the 1920s, when individual firms, such as oil companies and hotel chains, began issuing them to customers." Prior to that credit was offered between a local merchant and his customer. The answer also depends on what you consider a "credit card" and what one is made of. There have been tokens, metal plates, paper, among other things used for credit to buy merchandise. If you are referring to a bank credit card it was in 1946. It was a program invented by John Biggins between the customers of, Flatbush National Bank of Brooklyn in New York, and local merchants. It was called the "Charge-it" program. The merchant would deposit sales slips into the bank and the bank would bill the customer who used the card. In 1950 Diners Club issued their first credit card. American Express issued its first credit card in 1958 and later that same year Bank of America issued the BankAmericard, now visa.
Diners Club, which was techincally a charge card is usually considered the first credit card.
