The current model of an atom is called an electron cloud scientists got rid of the planetary model first because they realised it was inacurate with the electrons because they had shells and particular amount of electrons in each shell then bohrs model came in with the shells and then failed next bohrs refined model came in it it was the current model until scientist belived and proved that protons and neautrons were made up of smaller particles called quarks many argue with atoms and atomic theory but the fact of the matter is no image of an atom could be perfect because firstly if u could zoom in on an image of an atom about one centimetre big and a hairline tall then the atom itself would be about the size of 3 football fields

Basically, an atom is made of three components. The proton, a positively charged particle with a mass of 1, the proton, a neutral particle with a mass of 1, and the electron, a negatively charged particle with, yep, you guessed it! A mass of 1/1836.

Anyway, all of your protons like to stick together with the neutrons in a ball at the middle of the atom, called the nucleus. To put it to scale, the nucleus is about as big as a tennis ball in the middle of a football stadium. The rest is just empty space and the odd electron. The electrons are actually organised in shells around the nucleus (they become fields at a more advanced level) and each shell represents an energy level. This is how much energy the electron has, and the further out, the less energy each electron has.

To keep it all balanced, in a stable atom, the number of electrons must equal the number of protons. Why? So that the atom doesn't become charged. If it does the world will implode! Nah, charged atoms just stick with opposite charged atoms. This is called ionic bonding, and is how a lot of molecules are formed. Remember what I said about the electron's energy levels? Well, the higher up, the less energy, and the easier it is for another atom to take that electron. The two atoms therefore become charged, and stick to each other.

Which item best represents Thompsons mental image of an atom?

Thompson described his model as plum pudding. Since not many people even know what plum pudding is, i like to describe his model as a scoop of chocolate chip ice cream. Imagine the vanilla ice cream as the positive material and the chips as the negative material.

Why do scientifics use models to study atoms?

Main reason is that the real atom is already unknown. There was many models, like for example: Dalton Model - the atom was a solid ball. Rutherford - orbital model There are also other people that developed study and created their atomic models like Thomson, Bhor and Somerfield. We have today what scientists call the Nowadays Atomic Model, that is the most advanced model, able to best aproximate of a real atom and explain great number of theories. These models are theories about how is the atom, and a model is overtaken by other, when it is able to explain better the atom behaviour. For example, the model of Rutherford overtaken the model of Dalton. So, they use models to better approximate of a real atom in order to study it, because a real atom is not already known also because it is very hard to study a real atom, because it is very small.

What is the model that best describes the contraction of the muscle called?

There are different models that describe the contraction of muscles. Not everyone agrees on which is best. A couple of the models are the sliding-filament model and Huxley's model.
