Postmortem is the first book in the Kay Scarpetta series.
The first book in the Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell is "Postmortem," published in 1990. It introduces the character of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia.
It's written by Patricia Cornwell. I don't know where it was first published, but according to my reading of it the case is very unclosed. Patricia Cornwell's bestseller was published in 2002 in hardcover first. Although there will always be controversy with a case such as JTR, Cornwell's enormous amount of circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. Scott Peterson was convicted on much less evidence than Miss Cornwell presented.
Patricia Cornwell has currently written over 25 book, including 15 novels in her well-known Kay Scarpetta series. She has won numerous awards because of her books, including being the only author to earn the Edgar Award, John Creasey Memorial Award, Anthony Award, and Macavity Award all in one year. She is also the first American writer to have earned the British Book Awards' Crime Thriller of the Year.
