EDVAC(1946 - 52) - Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer is the first computer using the stored program concept. Programs were wired on the boards in the earlier models of computers. Dr.John Von Neumann introduced the " stored program " concept . The basic idea behind this concept is that a sequence of instructions and data can be stored in the memory of a computer for automatically directing the flow of operations .

One of the first was the British Collossus vacuum tube computer made in secret during the second world war to decode the Nazi enigma code signals intercepted by radio. Collossus ran a punched paper tape at 30 MPH through an optical reader. The stored program was written by Alan Turing amongst others at the Bletchley park Mansion in the Midlands.

The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM), nicknamed Baby, was the first stored program computer which implemented stored program concept (also known as Von Neumann Concept).

It ran its first program on 21 June 1948.It was build as a test bed for the Williams tube(an early form of computer memory)and not as a machine for practical use.

The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM), nicknamed Baby, was the world's first stored-program computer. It was was a very limited prototype computer built at the Victoria University of Manchester, England, by Frederic C. Williams, Tom Kilburn and Geoff Tootill, and ran its first program on 21 June 1948. The SSEM had a 32 bit word length and a memory of only 32 words using CRT based DRAM, the only arithmetic operations implemented in it's ALU were subtraction and negation. It operating speed was roughly 1.1kIPS.

The circuits designed and verified on the SSEM were then improved and used to build the Manchester Mark 1. The Manchester Mark 1 in turn quickly became the prototype for the Ferranti Mark 1, the world's first commercially available general purpose computer.

Was the computers easy to use?

Right now I am using a laptop computer to reply to your question. It is fairly easy to use. The earliest computers controlled weaver's looms. They were fairly easy to use but difficult to program. The program was difficult to change. That was the situation for the first 150 years of computers. Today you can make a number to changes yourself to your own presentations. You do not need a professional programmer to do it for you. You still need to get the basic program designed by a professional programmer for you to make your own presentations.
