At that point, the French technically still claimed that land, although American colonists were encroaching on their territory. However, after the Seven years war (French and Indian war in America) which began 1754 and ended in 1763, Spain claimed that territory, only to have France secretly reclaim it and eventually sell it to the US.

The Spanish ruled the Louisiana territory from 1762 until 1 October 1800 when it was returned to France in the Third Treaty of San Ildefonso but this treaty was kept a secret. The Spanish retained control until 30 November 1803 just a few weeks before France and the US concluded the Louisiana.
