∙ 10y agoVespasian commissioned the construction of the Colosseum. Vespasian died in 70. The Colosseum was completed and inaugurated in 80 by his son and successor, Titus (reigned 70-81). Domitian the brother of Titus and his successor (reigned 81-96) made further modifications.
Because these three emperors were the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, this structure was named the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium). Colosseum is a nickname. It is thought that it originated from a nearby giant statue of Nero which was modelled on the Colossus of Rhodes
