FDR's Fireside chats were a significant tool he used to communicate with the American people. Through these broadcasts he helped let them know that he was aware of their lack of work, and loss of home and that he was working on programs to help them. Roosevelt called his plan the "New Deal". Unfortunately, the "New Deal" programs failed utterly to improve the state of the American economy, and recent research has suggested that these were precisely the wrong nostrums. The New Deal programs stifled growth and retarded the economy, and magnified the impact of the Great Depression; this is a common result for government managed economic programs. The economy didn't recover until a year after the start of World War II.

The most significant event was the Great Depression. Banks failed and unemployment skyrocketed. Hoover was a firm believer in "laissez-faire". It was the idea that government should have no involvement with the economy, and that it would eventually right itself. Because of the devastating effects of the Depression, most of the public disagreed with him. Everyone blamed Hoover for their misfortune. The next election, Roosevelt won handily, promising a "New Deal" for Americans. The Depression led to multiple government programs to help jump start the economy. The country went in debt to create the programs, such as Social Security, and the government has never stopped adding programs for the American people. It's important to note that The Depression ended because of World War II, not because of Roosevelt's "New Deal".
