Validation allows users to restrict what can be entered, by setting up validation rules, like specifying a minimum value that can be entered, or that a cell can only accept dates for example. There are a lot of other ways validation can be used.

To cancel an entire entry before entering it into an Excel cell, hit the Esc key or click on the Cancel button on the formula bar, which is the red x.
It changes to Edit mode.

As you type, Excel displays the entry in the FORMULA BAR, and also displays the active cell reference int he Name box on the left.
In Excel, you can set validation rules on a cell to ensure the data meets specified conditions before Excel will accept the entry.
