The Greek city-states of mainland Greece sent out their surplus populations to fend for themselves by establishing new cities around the Mediterranean and Black Seas - a couple of thousand cities, ranging from such city-states as Massilia (today's Marseilles in France), Syracuse in Sicily, Neapolis (New City, today's Naples in Italy), to Tripolis (Three Cities, today's Tripoli in Libya), to Miletus in Asia Minor and Tanais in southern Russia.

Where were Greek colonies located?

Many cities sent out colonies when their population exceeded the land capacity of the parent city. There were several hundred. And some of these colonies in turn outgrew the capacity of their land then also sent out colonies. Some well known ones are Athens (Miletus), Corinth (Corfu), Sparta (Taranto). However some colonies were set up by a consortium of cities anxious to get rid of a surplus and also get rid of potential problem-makers.
