Though the Song ruled China in relative peace for hundreds of years, their reign ended with a major invasion from Mongol armies in the North. These Mongols, kept at bay by Song military technology, had finally learned to use gunpowder themselves. They gradually conquered Chinese provinces farther and farther southeast, and in 1279 CE, the last of Song territory fell to the Mongol invaders.
