Main group elements have elements from groups 1 and 2, except hydrogen and groups 13 to 18. Main group elements are elements in groups who's lightest elements are shown by helium, lithium, boron, beryllium, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine.

The term "main group" elements has been a term used to describe the elements in groups 1,2, and 13 through 18 of the modern Periodic Table.

In the older versions of the periodic table it was groups IA, IIA, but there was an ambiguity in which of the other pairs of groups were labelled A or B.

So the "main group" elements are those in families with Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, & Ar.

The main group elements are Groups 1, 2 and 13-18; or Groups IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA, VA, VIA, VIIA, and VIIIA, depending on how your periodic table numbers the groups.
