No one person "invented" the NHL. The National Hockey League has its beginnings in the 1890s as the AHA (Amateur Hockey Association). Squabbling between owner/managers of AHA clubs over which teams should be allowed to participate resulted in the AHA breaking up in 1898 and promptly re-forming for the '98-99 season as the CAHL (Canadian Amateur Hockey League). In 1905, with more squabbling over a merger with some of the clubs from the rival FAHL (Federal Amateur Hockey League), two CAHL and three FAHL clubs were left out and the remaining clubs from both leagues combined to form the ECAHA (Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association). During this era the new prevalence of professionalism obligated the top leagues to allow the practise, and in 1908 the ECAHA became an all-professional circuit and renamed itself the Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA). Still further squabbling between team owners and arena operators over matters of finance found the ECHA splitting into two rival leagues in 1909 -- the CHA (Canadian Hockey Association) and the NHA (National Hockey Association). The competiton between the teams for the best players ruined the weakest of the CHA teams, and by the middle of the 1909-10 season the top two CHA teams joined the NHA and the CHA folded. Personal animosities between owners of NHA teams came to a head in 1917, with the result that four of the league's five teams dropped out and re-formed (or simply renamed the league, minus one owner and his team) as the NHL. The four teams were Toronto ("Arenas"), Ottawa, Canadiens (Montreal), and Wanderers (Montreal). Only three of those four teams completed the NHL's inaugural 1917-18 campaign -- Wanderers' rink burned down mid-season and the now homeless team withdrew from the league. The NHL operated with only three teams in its second season, 1918-19, the infamous year in which the Stanley Cup was not awarded, the playoffs abandoned amidst the deadly worldwide influenza epidemic. Quebec ("Bulldogs") joined the NHL for a healthier, four-team 1919-20 season.
