first question ...do you folks have a preference for gold filled or vermeil? I have heard that vermeil doesn't hold up any better than plating ...?
...also, I have some gold plated pewter that wears off so quickly, I wouldn't dare sell anything made of it ...can I treat it with something to prolong the gold plating? I wore a necklace for a total of maybe 15 hours and the plating wore off enough to make the beads grey & dull ...how can I sell that? I'm so disappointed in gold plated pewter but I'm also afraid plated brass would tarnish so quickly .
Gold filled is 1/20 14k karat gold, which means 1 part out of like 40 is actually gold
The term "filled" is used to fool people into thinking that the piece has some measurable ammount of gold in it, but there isn't
Hardly none in plated. Neither plated or filled jewelry even include the gold in them in the price, thats how little gold there is
Gold filled is a much heavier layer than plate.
14 Karat Heavy Gold Filled(plated).
gold filled unlike g.p which is gold plated GF is full gold and makes the jewelry more valuable
This indicates that the jewelry is 14kt gold filled. Gold filled is similar to gold-plated jewelry, but the amount of gold used with gold filled is usually more and the piece is of higher quality. "14/20" translates to "1/20th of the total weight (5%) is 14kt gold" The other 95% of the jewelry is not gold.
Nope....Gold layered jewelry (also called "gold plated" jewelry) is the type where a base metal such as copper or brass is coated with a layer of gold, hence the term "gold-layered". On the other hand, gold-filled jewelry is where solid gold is filled with other metals like copper and brass. The fusion, which is made from heat and pressure, is permanent. First thing will comes to our mind about the What is the difference between 18K gold Jewelry and 18K gold Plated jewelry is the price, 18K gold jewelry is much expansive than 18K gold Plated, it usually will cost you 70-100 USD per gram 18K gold, if your chain necklace weight about 25 grams, then if will cost you 1750- ..
GE means Gold Electro-Plated or Gold Plated.
you cant clean it !!!! gold plated jewelry doesn't last long because of the thin layer of gold
Pawn shops will NOT take it. You can get money for it if you have several pounds of it though on eBay
If it's really gold-plated ( 10K / 14K / 18K ....) you don't want to plate it with silver for the gold using is the value of the jewelry. Do u mean yellow gold plated to white gold plated? If that's what you want, the answer is yes! You can have it plated to your desired color without changing the gold content!
It almost always means that the piece of jewelry is Gold Plated over a Silver piece of Jewelry I work in the jewelry business and the above answer is incorrect. 585 is the stamp for a peice that is 14K gold. If it is plated it will have additional letters such as GE for gold electroplate or GF for gold filled. If it is stamped 585 P that stands for plum and has been tested to be 14K solid gold.
Gold plated jewelry may or may not be magnetic. This will depend on the amount of gold present. Pure gold in itself is usually not magnetic.
Generally not, since plated gold is generally clean gold on a base metal, while gold filled is from 5% and higher
