Shotguns are best for hunting quail. I would suggest a winchester model shotgun because of their high quality. The winchester x3 series seem to be pretty good. If you are looking for other type of rifles, .22 caliber are best in my opinion. I own an old .22 winchester and it shoots great. I've also seen airgun quail hunting. If you are interested in airguns, I suggest a pcp (precharged pneumatic) rifle because of its great accuracy and power. The airarms s410 is a great long and short distance .22 pcp airgun.

This applies to most hunting situations: orange shooting vest (with a game pouch, good quality hiking boots, brush pants or an old pair of jeans, gloves(if cold), orange hunting hat, and a belt. Pack a survival kit, multiple knives (minimum of 2), a lighter, lots of string (different sizes and strength), a compass and map of the area, your various licenses you will need. And of course a gun, for quail, a shotgun any gauge will do fine.

Is a Winchester Model 1400 RANGER 12 gauge considered the best gun for hunting?
No firearm can ever inherently be called 'the best hunting gun.' I assume that you are talking about birds of some sort (Dove, Quail, Turkey, etc.) because you specifically mentioned a 12 gauge shotgun, which is inappropriate for many types of hunting. As far as being the 'best', the ranger is a plenty suitable gun for bird hunting, but the 'best' gun for hunting is based mostly on personal preferance, and situation. for example, i would much prefer a Remington 1100 from circa 1970. This, again, is based on personal preferance. Keep in mind also that the Ranger is a moderatly priced shotgun, and although price is not always (rarely, in fact) the best way to judge performance and quality, and you can easily spend 2, 3, or 20+ THOUSAND dollars on a shotgun, for various reasons. With this in mind, The Ranger being the 'best' hunting gun out there is simply to general a statement to give credence to, and would have to be considered a false statement. So, the short answer is NO, but the important part is, could you afford a better gun if you had the oppertunity? Would your skill and time spent hunting justify this purchase? Do you need a 10 Thousand dollar shotgun? If you are like most people who hunt birds, it is a seasonal thing, and a Ranger 12 would make for a very happy Buyer. Hope this Helps, Sean.
