At one time, they were considered different species. Currently they are lumped into one species, brown bear (Ursus arctos). The grizzly was Ursus horibilus, now it's a type of brown bear (Ursus arctos horribilus) but of course, if you read older books it will still be split.

Grizzlies tend to avoid you at all cost, don't like the way we smell. Black bears can live with people as is the case now when they're turnin' up in folks backyards in Connecticut and Jersey. With any bear, food should be kept up high and bears should NEVER be fed. Most problems come when people don't realize the danger they pose, especially a sow with cups. When hiking, bring a powerful type of mace/pepper spray and make lots of noise when in the woods in the Fall when bears are fattenin' up for the winter. Good answer Rick. In addition to that. Bears in the wild tend to avoid humans. When exposed to the food source "human" they tend to lose the natural fear. If you are being attacked by a bear, there is a major difference. Brown/Grizzly bear attacks are mostly defensive while most black bear attacks are predatory. The general recommendation for Grizzly bears is to lie down and play dead, go into a fetal position and try to protect your head. With black bears you need to climb a tree that is big enough that the black bear can't push down but small enough that he can't climb it. The reason for this is that black bears are trying to kill you.
