For an equal amount of effort from the same rider, a mountainbike ought to be faster. It's likely to be lighter, offer a better riding position and multiple gears will allow the rider to ride more efficiently.
It's really much more down to how you ride it than which type of bike it is. Slowly pootling around on a MTB won't give any more exercise than slowly pootling around on a cruiser. If you're serious about getting some exercise I'd recommend a MTB. Odds are far better that you'll be able to find an efficient riding position on a MTB than on a cruiser. If you don't know how, go by a bicycle store and have them set the bike up for your size so that you get a decent riding position. Don't forget that eventually it'll be your commitment that'll make the difference. If you don't do the riding and push yourself a bit while doing it it doesn'y matter which bike you're using.
You can find a beach cruiser bike online at websites such as Beach Bike Outlet. You can also purchase one through the Target website under their sports & outdoors section.
I would just google some local bike shops and see if they carry any of the beach cruisers. Or you can buy them online.
There are many places where you can buy a small basket for your beach cruiser bike. One great place to purchase a small basket is www.beachbikes.net.

In 1979 the first official mountain bike was launched. Tom Ritchey of Redwood city, California started building fat-tire frames. The Lawwill Pro Cruiser was the first mountain bike which was sold for $500 overseas.

The biggest difference between a chopper bike and a cruiser style bike is that with a cruiser you are leaning forward, lying on the bike as it were, with a chopper style bike you are sitting upright and the handles are higher up.
In 1979, in Jacksonville, FL, the Jamis Bicycle Company started up and reintroduced the classic beach cruiser to the market. Jamis cruisers were an instant overnight success. The Boss cruiser was easily the best selling beach cruiser in Florida in the 80's. In 1983, Jamis expanded to mountain bikes and won a number of awards and positive reviews for providing quality bikes that wouldn't break the bank. In 1985, Jamis released their first competition ready mountain bike, the Dakar. In 1990, bicycle distributor G. Joannou Cycle Company of Northvale, NJ purchased the Jamis Bicycle Company.
A normal bike is different that a cruiser bike in many ways. A cruiser is not meant to be ridden long distances and is mostly meant for having an easy ride. A road bike is meant to go long distances and is therefore lighter.
This really depends on the type of cruiser, how old it is, and what kind of condition it is in. A used beach cruiser will usually sell for $50 - $100. Now, if you have a vintage cruiser or an old Schwinn some can sell for as much as a few thousand dollars. If you have something you think could be worth money I would find the serial number off the bottom of the bike and contact the manufacturer for more information.
