Neither. They are about equal, but each one is more effective with different families of germs. If you have tick bite fever, tetracycline is the treatment of choice. Amoxycillin on the other hand is an excellent choice for respiratory infections such as bronchitis.

The reason we have different antibiotics is because as germs differ, the antibiotics that kill them have to differ. Some antibiotics are "narrow spectrum" in that they will only kill a certain germ. Those are the best ones to use. Amoxycillin and tetracycline are "broad spectrum", meaning that they kill a range of germs. There are families of germs, and they respond to different antibiotics. You aren't going to expect a drug for a sore throat to cure leprosy.

Can you take amoxicillin and tetracycline at the same time?

swedishcovenant .org says that they will interact with eachother. But umm.edu says that they are okay when admixed?? Whatever that means. Metronidazole (Flagyl) and Penicillin, Tetracycline or other antibiotics are frequently prescribed together for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. Expect GI side effects, but from personal experience SIBO can be so terrible (like Crohn's) that there is psychological relief in knowing the drug side effects mean the regime is working. Intestinal infections such as SIBO are not permanently curable, but treatable with this combination of drugs (designed to treat both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria), and will need to be repeated when symptoms reappear. Yogurt or probiotic supplements help restore normal gastrointestinal flora and are essential when taking this combination, as it will kill off the "good bugs" too. Hope this helps, and good luck to you!
