-1 is a greater number than -3.

For negative numbers, it is helpful to think of a number line, with 0 in the middle, positive numbers to the right, and negative numbers to the left. For instance:

-9,-8,-7,-6,-5,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

Numbers further to the right are greater than numbers further to the left. It is clear from this that -1 is greater than -3.
