The Washington Monument is the oldest monument in the US capital. Construction began on it in 1848. Though dedicated in 1885, it didn't open to the public until October 9, 1888. At 555.5 feet in height, the monument stood as the world's tallest structure until 1889 when the Eiffel Tower was completed.
