Look at the time signature at the beginning of a piece. The most common is 4/4. The bottom number tells what type of note gets one beat, so in this case, it would be a quarter note. If there was an 8 in the bottom, it would be an eighth note. Same with rests, a quarter rest in 3/4 time (with a 4 in the bottom of the time signature) would also get one beat.
