France claimed the area of present day North Dakota plus much of the United States in 1682. In 1713, England was given the northern part of present day North Dakota. In 1803, the United States acquired the Louisiana Purchase which included much of present day North Dakota. In 1818, the United States acquired the northern section from England.

Michigan was not a part of the Treaty of 1818. Parts of North Dakota and Minnesota and small portions of South Dakota and Montana were ceded to the United States by Great Britain in the Treaty of 1818. All of the area known as Rupert's Land which was located south of the 49th parallel and west to the Rocky Mountains was ceded to the US.

The Louisiana territory as acquired in the Louisiana Purchase included land that spanned from Louisana in the south to Montana and North Dakota in the north. It also included a small portion of land from two Canadian provinces: Alberta and Saskatchewan. The territory north of the 49th parallel was ceded to the British in 1818.
